Tension arose at the funeral of Reina Nasino’s deceased daughter, Baby River today, October 16, 2020.
The hashtags #JusticeForBabyRiver and #FreeReinaMaeNasino started becoming trending on Twitter that has sequentially occupied the 1st and 2nd spot of the Philippine Trend at 4:00 o'clock in the afternoon today because of the recent events that happened during and after Baby River’s funeral.
People were quick to blame the court’s justice system for giving Nasino, a detained activist, an unfair order of only a 6-hour furlough to be with her child, who was taken away from her weeks after birth. The Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) president Domingo Egon Cayosa commented, “The tragic death of 3-month-old Baby River Nasino highlights the need to do more, better, faster in the justice sector." From a continuous 3-day furlough, Manila Judge Paulino Gallegos cut it to 6 hours allotted for 2 days meaning 3 hours each. However, what happened was ironic to that of the Manila City Jail's reason of reducing Nasino's furlough which was the lack of manpower because there was a total of 43 personnels that ushered her with handcuffs to her daughter's wake. .
"Saan ka nakakita na ang pulis ang kumukontrol sa isang libing? Ito ay araw ng paglilibing sa isang musmos na pinagkaitan ng estado ng pagkakataon," said Kapatid. (Where else can you see a burial controlled by cops? This is the day that we bury a child deprived of opportunities by the State.)
It is because of the negligence and the unfair treatment of the court of justice and prison systems that most people are pointing as the reasons why Baby River died and that caused Reina Nasino to suffer a loss.
Pneumonia was known to be Baby River’s cause of death last October 9.
