Typhoon Ulysses sinks Cagayan Valley

Twenty-four towns and a city in Cagayan Valley drowned in floodwater while thousands of its residents are still stranded on rooftops asking for immediate rescue.

The heavy flooding in Cagayan Valley started last Friday, November 13 in the wake of typhoon Ulysses' rage due to continuous rainfall, siltation of the Cagayan River, and release of excess water in Magat Dam.

Ascio Macalan, Colonel of Cagayan Provincial Risk Reduction Management Office (PDRRMO) said that the Cagayan Province became a vast-like ocean after it was sinked with floodwaters on Friday.

“Ang sitwasyon namin dito ngayon ay kakaiba sa nakaraang taon. Grabe ang baha ngayon sa Cagayan, na-surpass niya ‘yung previous na baha nung 2019,” said Macalan.

More than 47,000 residents were seen stranded on the roofs of their homes waiting for immediate rescue.

“Since last night we’ve been receiving calls from Region 2. We’re almost done with the NCR (National Capital Region) operations. Most of the calls are continuously coming from people in Metro Manila who have been contacted by families or friends in Region 2,” NDRRMC Deputy Spokesperson Rachelle Miranda said in an interview with ABS-CBN.

Mayors of the affectes localities called food and medicine donations for the affected families as water level rises to the roof of the residents’ houses.

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC), 65,000 families and over 232, 000 individuals are currently staying in evacuation centers while clearing operations in some parts of Luzon are still ongoing.

Typhoon Ulysses left the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Friday morning leaving severe damage in parts of Luzon.
