Labella: Garbage management starts with us

Cebu City Mayor Edguardo Labella asked that the bottled water manufacturers to provide recycling bins across the city.

On the evening of October 13, 2020, there was massive flooding that had the Department of Public Services (DPS) collect 231 tons of garbage, most of it being plastic water bottles.

“Gani angay siguro natong ipatawag ang mga bottled water manufacturers, kung mahimo magbutang tag water bottle receptacles. It has been proven effective sa atong mga parks,” Labella said.

The Parks and Playground Office observed that people are more likely to follow and throw their trashes especially water bottles properly if recycling bins were visible and easy to find.

Hoping that the bottled water companies would comply with the mayor’s request, most of the citizens choose bottled water as a safer choice compared to other sources of drinkable liquid, especially during the pandemic.

With recycling bins available for the public to use, the DPS will have an easier time collecting the bottles that will immediately be delivered to the materials recover facility (MRF).

Labella reminded the public that managing wastes is still the people’s responsibility and not someone else’s.

Clogged waterways worsen the destruction of floods in communities which is why people must learn how to manage their garbages to avoid worse disasters especially in the current situation the country, the whole world is in.
