The Cebu City Government is now planning for the return of 1, 355 jeepneys to ply on the streets again provided that they follow the health protocols and guidelines for operations under the new normal.
Mayor Edgar Labella said that these jeepneys will follow the route approved by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) and the Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO).
The jeepneys are selected by Councilor James Cuenco, leader of the newly formed Ad hoc Committee, based on the routes allowed and the number of jeepneys the city plans to return to operation in the first phase.
Mayor Labella said that they want a gradual return of jeepneys.
“Hinay-hinay lang.” said Labella.
From a total of 5000 jeepneys in the city before the pandemic, only these 1,355 who must be able to submit pertinent documents such as operation certification, licenses, and health clearances will be qualified.
The city will be maintaining the “No face mask and shield, no ride policy” for all forms of public transportation.
Meanwhile, Mayor Labella assured the 3,500 jeepney drivers who might not be able to return to the streets that the city government would help them find jobs.
